International Study Centre

International Year One

The International Study Centre helps students prepare for undergraduate or postgraduate study at Royal Holloway, University of London. It is a dedicated learning space for international students, sharing the University's campus and facilities.

Equivalent to undergraduate year one, International Year One provides a higher level of academic and English language support specifically designed to meet the needs of international students. We have also developed a specific route for any students who previously met undergraduate entry requirements and would prefer to join us in January, rather than waiting to start their studies in September 2021.

By joining the International Year One at the International Study Centre over deferring your studies to the next academic year, you will save time and money by progressing to the second year of your degree, and thus completing your degree, in the same time as originally planned.

Academic English Skills and Academic Personal Tutorial* streams

The International Year One programmes will be available in two streams, offered with either the Academic English Skills or Academic Personal Tutorial* modules, depending on your English language level.

If you are starting your studies with an English level lower than the direct entry requirement for Royal Holloway, then you will study the Academic English Skills module. This will focus on building your English skills by improving your academic writing, effective and extensive reading strategies, and listening and recording information effectively.

If you would have been eligible to start undergraduate studies in September at Royal Holloway and join the programme with a higher IELTS (or equivalent) level, you will take the Academic Personal Tutorial* module. You will be assigned a personal tutor who will support, guide and advise you on your study skills, allowing you to focus on improving your academic abilities.

Willow

“I feel like my time at the International Study Centre has integrated me into the environment more than a home student, because they’re moving away from home for the first time, and being thrown into the uni environment can be quite overwhelming. Whereas for me going into the International Study Centre, I know that everyone there has just moved away from home and we’re all international students, and we don’t have any friends, so we bond a lot closer, a lot faster..”
